The region is characterized by the Catalan cuisine, Mar i Muntanya, with fish, seafood, hearty stews, aïoli (garlic and oil sauce), anchoïde (French anchovy dip) and crème Catalane.
All year round on Sunday and Thursday mornings, a market is held in the village Market Square, just around the corner from the hotel. Here you can find bargains ranging from hairpins to local cultivated vegetables, fruit, cheese, meat, fabrics and clothes. Above all, enjoy the street life. A tip is to purchase your lunch and dinner food from the market.
Don’t miss eating the fish and seafood in Port Vendres, the local fishing port which is only 10 minutes from Banyuls. There you can also buy a dish of fruit de mer from the fish market to take back to the hotel. Next to the market is also a good oyster bar. See the map below.
